ARTIST PORTRAIT
SUTARTA
Born in Ubud in 1962. Graduated in economics and management major from a college in Surabaya. He is a father of 3 adult kids and lives and works in Ubud.
A keen self-learned painter, he has studied painting independently as well learning from several senior painters.
Sutarta’s work is imbued with spiritual content inspired by nature, or the environment. His color sensitivity is free from the familiar traditional Balinese red-yellow-black-white color scheme, though his use of triangle, square, and circle undoubtly resonates the symbolism of Balinese cosmology. Despite his initial non-intention to do so, perhaps, being deeply instilled since his childhood, the philosophy of Balinese Hinduism inevitably spills over onto his canvasses.
Most important above all, however, is his desire to communicate nature’s alteration caused by human actions. The current natural imbalance breeds deep worries and concern inside him.
He resorts to express his concern through the quiet path of artistic visualization; to speak the dread of natural disturbance using abstraction and personalized language of expression.
